I have a two latops and a wireless network in my house. My old laptop has internal IP 192.168.1.1 while the new one has 192.168.1.6 ( i ran ipconfig to find out ). I am having trouble running a bit torrent program. How do i make the new laptops IP 192.168.1.1?

Thanks:

Right Click on Network Places on desktop got to Properties then choose the connect go to its properties
Then in the Box saying : The Connection Uses The Following items choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and go to its properties , then in the new dialogue box put the IP , Subnet Mask, Gateway, DNS and click OK and then you are done
This works only with Cable or Broadband as I use this, I dont know about Dialup

Well first off are you sure your IP is "actually" 192.168.1.1 because that is usually the default gateway, not the IP. Also you're more than likely running DHCP on your network, most home networks do. By running DHCP you have no say on what IP you get, it is given to you by the DHCP server. One thing you can try is to release and renew your IP. You do this by clicking on Start --> Run --> type in "cmd" (without quotes). Once the command prompt comes up type in ipconfig /release and hit enter. After it says your IP has been released type in ipconfig /renew. Wait for it to come up telling you what your IP is going to be and close the command prompt. More than likely it will still give you the same IP you had before and even if it does if you're able to view the internet and the torrent still isn't working than it's not your network connection that's the problem.

Run ipconfig again with /all behind it. You will need to get the unet mask default gateway and DNS addresses. After you ave this info, open up network connections in the computer that you want to set the IP address in. Right click your wireless connection and go to properties. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then properties. Click Use the following IP address radio button and fill in the static IP address you want in your case 192.168.1.1. Fill in the subnet mask and default gateway. Click on Use the following DNS server addresses radio button and fill the information. You may not have 2 DNS addresses that is OK. Click on OK, and this computer will keep this address. You will need to go into your router and reserve this address so that it does not try to give this address out using DHCP.

I am answering the question with a presumtion that u have Windows 2000 or XP....

To change the IP address u need to go to network connections (U can do this from control panel) .....Right Click on the Wireless Network connection ...... Click on properties....

U will then see " This connection uses the following items ....Scroll down and u can See TCP IP Settings .... PLease highlight it and click on the properties ...u will get a property page ...u can edit the IP address there ....

Please be advised that dont have two computers with same Ip address on a network or they will have a conflict and they wont work ...i mean the network ...change the IP of the old comp or disscont it from the network

I hope this helps :D

Note For Windows 98 Please run " winipcfg " (Dont paste the qoutes) from the command prompt

if your TCP/IP is set to have your router assign your ip address, then all you should have to do is on both laptops at a c:> prompt is type ipconfig /release
This command will break the connection with the router. Once both connections have been broken, then type ipconfig /renew on the new laptop. Your router should set this laptop to ...1.1.
If you need more info, email me.
