I own a Salt water store here in Toronto area- Canada. For a set-up lighting, pumps, ballistic, fans, HQI bulbs(if housing coral)you will need high intensity lights if you are going to keep coral. All coral are photosynthetic and will grow according to their environment. I would estimate your cost at and not including sand, coral, fish, protein skimmer, etc. would be around $380.00(cdn)-Nanocube - does not come with a protein skimmer - however you might be able to get away with it for this unit. I've heard from customers that they have not needed a protein skimmer with this model. A protein skimmer skims off the excess waste and unwanted trace elements. Nanocube is a good little system. happy fish keeping...kat salt water tanks do not have to be expensive, you buy frags for corals, we charge $20.00 a frag and depending on the fish, availablity, where they are from, will determine the cost. Yes, you can buy used equipment, make sure their are no leaks. The whole salt water hobby has really changed over the years and is not that expensive. It depends on how you want to set it up, for example, coral only, fish only or both. In a small 28 gallon, you can do it at an afforable cost. Shop around. I started this business in my basement selling only equipment first. After two years I established a clientel that encouraged me to open a store with livestock. I did. That was 7 years ago and I'm still in business, that says something. We also were featured in The Robb Report magazine. If you decide to go bigger you can use the existing equipment for your new tank as well. Converting your old tank into a sump. We work with our customers on their budget, you will enjoy this hobby because it is very soothing, calming and amazing. kat

It can be cheep
I'm Buying a 28 gal saltwater tank (EVERYTHING INCLUDING THE LIVE ROCK AND SAND) off of a USED site here in Ottawa for $200.00(tank, stand, sump, MORE than enough pumps, skimmer, more than enough filters...)

I will be able to set this tank up for Seahorses and sell all of the extra stuff on a used site and make my money back.
$0.0 for a small saltwater tank set up.
I would have to buy the animals.

I've been looking on used sites for about 2 months now for a setup like this and BINGO, found it.
Check your local USED merchendise papers and internet and you would be surprised what you can find.
There are even some person here selling a 65 gal complete with 3 fish, a few coral, a cleaner crew, 2 shrimp, a starfish, EVERYTHING for $800.00
So when people tell you it is too expensive and try to PUSH you away from what YOU want, IGNORE them and do a little looking.
The bigger the tank the easier it is to maintain, LIKE i said, I am using this tank for SEAHORSES ONLY.
Good luck and enjoy.

ok, this could be a protracted question i will attempt to be short in my answer. one situation approximately salt water tanks is which you won't be able to diminish corners to shop money. it fairly is costly and the "fancy" issues are quite necessary. nicely, some which you indexed in any case. shall we start up with length and communicate concerning to the bare necessities, 29 gallons is an extremely small reef tank. For a beginner salt water aquarist, seventy 5-a hundred gallons is a much extra appropriate determination. With better sized tanks, blunders that beginners make are a splash extra forgiving, IE extra durable for water parameters to variety. Salt water dwellers are so plenty extra mushy and require extra area than freshwater. 2) you have left lighting fixtures out of the equation. in case you opt to maintain corals and inverts, sufficient lighting fixtures is a ought to and that's not low fee. distinctive bulbs and a definite hood are required. 3) Protein skimmer and ability heads are a necessity. aeration of water, extra filtration, and removal of proteins would desire to take place. So those are the user-friendly needs. A sump is a few thing which could be performed your self to shop money and purchased later and a chiller is barely mandatory for chilly water fish. basically, it fairly is nicely worth it to attend, shop up your money and do it with the only right suited equipment the 1st time around. it ought to be even worse to skim by employing devoid of paying for the fundamental equipment, then lose a collection of coral, inverts, and fish. wish that helped.

you'd need the same amount as to set up a large one. you'd still need to buy the salt, etc. the only cost additional would be to buy a larger tank. i suggest you think about it and go to a petco or petsmart and get a larger one. most people who buy small tanks want a larger one later because there is just so much to buy and so many of varieties of fish, coral, etc.
for a 28 gal. i would say 1300.00 because salt water fish are beautiful but expensive. consider going larger like 75 to 125 gallons. in the long run, it's easier to care for a larger tank too

A full saltwater setup, from the tank to the filter to the lighting to the accessories to the coral to the heater to the water treatment down to the fish themselves... At least $1,500. And I mean at LEAST. Saltwater is really expensive to start from scratch.

dude, stick with freshwater, unless you have the money. The water is expensive, and the fish that look the coolest are too. Just go to ebay and see what the prices for everything are. Or go to PetCo.
