I really want to know how I can tell them apart. Please note that I'm Canadain and I use Canadain money but I wouldn't mind being able to tell American dollars from American counterfeits.

There's a PDF on the Bank of Canada's website on the right side of this page for retail people to check notes.

For the most part, counterfeit detection pens WILL NOT WORK on Canadian currency. They will work on US currency.

i don't know much about canadian money, but American dollars all have various counterfeit protections... there's always a watermark of the president's face (whichever is on that particular bill) on the bill. In the higher number bills, there's a small plastic strip inside the bill near one of the edges. Also, there's one of the numbers on the bill that is written in metallic ink, so when you move it in the light it will reflect differently and might change colors. another one of the numbers usually looks like it has small lines going through it, but it's actually very small text... it says the number of the bill... for a $10, it says "ten" repeatedly, all the way across the number. The green ink on the back of the bill should be raised against your fingers... maybe not enough that you can feel, but if you scratch your fingernail across it, you can feel it's bumpy. The paper isn't really paper, but some kind of superheated fiber material... a lot of it is cotton, there may be some real paper in it... i don't remember what all it's made of, but that's why the counterfeit pens work... they'll appear a yellowish color on bills, but black on real paper.

My mom tried to tell me once that the spiderwebby looking stuff on the front actually has a spider hidden somewhere with it, but i've never seen it, so i think she's lying.

and there's a lot more security things that they haven't released... only the government knows because if they told everyone, people would know how to make their own counterfeit bills.

The easiest way is to hold it up to the light and check to see if there is a colored strip in it.
