to my knowledge it dates back to the time before digital.
Most brand names were printed on the face in the center, above the mount for the three hands.
if you position the hands at 10:10
the minute hand points to the 2,
and the hour points very close to 10,
forming an almost symmetrical 'V' with the brand name framed in the middle calling attention to it.
it became the standard display,
and carried over into the digital era.

This is because the two hands of the watch, when placed at 10:10 form a neat frame for the brand name of the watch. If you look more closely, you will notice that most watches have the brand name in that area.
Neat isn't it!

The rumor is that this is the time Lincoln (or someone else famous) was killed.
Not so.
It just happens to be the positioning of the hands that obstructs the least on a watch face (such as a company logo, the date window). It's balanced and pleasing to the eye.

analog: usually the name of the watch is at the top so it frames the name; smiley face. I would add to this source that if the hands hang down they look 'broken'. digital: as the link says, this time shows that the LED is working (while giving a real time: e.g. the 8 can only appear at the end, etc)

Not only in ads but also in clock/watch shop all the watches show a time of 10.10 cause the needle of watch in that position gives an impression of smile on pace (pleasant)
That is the reason why they are put on 10.10

because of the sound a "clock" makes when it strikes 12 o'clock (or every hour, for that matter), you know the startling sound in suspense/horror movies(tennnng!!! tennng!!!) which sounds like 10:10.
okay, we were just joking when we came up with that answer until one of us realized that it made sense (a little.)

I had also wondered over this question once. My father told me that it represented a smile.
I asked the shopkeeper, he also gave same reply.
Please rank my answer as best.
