I came home the other night with a shell I thought was empty from the coast. I had carried around the shell for a long time, and nothing had came out. Later that night, I had checked the shell to make sure that there wasn't a crab inside. I couldn't really tell, so I put the shell in a large glass of water. I've never had a hermit crab before and have been doing extensive research on care for them. My question is, "How long can a hermit crab remain in plain drinking water?" I realize his current habitat isn't suitable, but I need to know ASAP so that way I know if it's really hurting it at the moment.

note: I WAS NOT AWARE THERE WAS A CRAB IN THE SHELL. I HAD NO INTENTIONS OF TAKING IT OUT OF THE WILD. I DON'T LIVE NEAR A COAST, SO IT'S NOT LIKE I CAN TAKE IT BACK THAT EASILY.

Hermit crabs do NOT like being submerged in water. Period. It could die very soon if you keep him in there. He's probably waving his claws around right now going "Get me out of here!" He'll drown if he stays in there much longer.

You need to take it out and put it in a small tank with damp, but not moist sand and probably a branch or two for it to climb on.

hermit crabs need air to breathe. Before you take an animal out of the wild it would be a good idea to do some bloody research first. What did you think was going to happen. Oh, i'll just take this hermit crab out of the wild and bring him home even though i have no where to keep him. God. If you are lucky he may be alive. please remove him.

TAKE HIM OUT! My hermit crab always sleeps, and the store I bought him from said to submerge him in water for a second or two to get him to come out. Why? Because they aren't meant to be in water

he will die because hermit crabs are land animals. They are not easy to take care of. They require a special habitat and you have to give them salt baths.
