I put an entire quart in the old 302 ('93 F-150). But I use 30W oil for the rest. I've been doing this for 3 years every 3000 miles. Oil stays nice and clean. Like the others said, be careful not to get too low viscosity. I always change filter and add 1qt any kind of tranny fluid after 1 gallon Rotella Truck 30W, then top off with 30W as necessary.

If it's labeled with a weight, 10W30 or something like that, it's more than likely engine oil. I've never seen red engine oil but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Transmission fluid in an engine has a very negative effect on bearings. If you're in doubt, change it and use a quality brand.

Transmission Fluid is never labled with the oil weight. Just the specs if it meets DEXRON III or later standards.
If the oil was labeled 10W-30 then its a multi-grade motor oil. being red doesnt mean its Tranny fluid. Its just the type of additives the manufacturer used.

It is probably oil. It will not hurt to put a little transmission fluid in the oil, but if you are worried just get it changed. It will be OK.

Ok, you are right to think your oil should not be red... secondly don't drive the car unless it's to the shop.. get an oil change asap.. Should not be that big of a deal if you get it fixed right away..
one other question, it sounds like you said you poured the new oil in a cup and it was red. is this right? You might wanna clarify a bit, Hope i helped..

Marvel Mystery oil is basically the same thing as tranny fluid with a different label. Just drain the oil, change the filter, and you should be in good shape!

If you think it is something other than engine oil, drain it, change the oil filter and add what you are certain is motor oil. Transmission oil will not do the job of properly lubricating your engine.

Putting a bit of tranny fluid in an engine is good for freeing up sticky or lazy hydraulic valve lifters.
