ALRIGHT ALRIGHT LETS MAKE IT SHORT!!

The Javanese are an ethnic group native to the Indonesian island of Java. They are predominantly located in the central to eastern parts of the island. At 90 million people (as of 2004) it is the largest ethnic group on the island, and also in Indonesia.

Most Javanese are Muslim. Some also follow Christianity (Protestantism and Catholicism). This is also true in rural areas.

In Indonesia, Javanese can be found in all professions, especially in the government and the military. Traditionally, most Javanese are farmers.

In Malayia the Javanese are considered and grouped as Malays. In Indonesia, the Javanese being the majority of the population does not want, or resented to be regarded as Malays. This was maybe due to political reasons, seeing that they were the majority of the population. But in the Malay Archipelago which consists of the Malaysian Peninsular, Singapore, Indonesia, Southern Thailand, Brunei, The Borneo Island and Southern Philippines they were considered as Malays. But one pertinent point to note was that (1) The Indonesian national language is Malay, and (2) When you totalled up the population of the Malay Archipelago the Malays become the majority that is about 70 percent of the inhabitants while the Javanese as a separate ethnicity was only about 30 percent. Hence the usage of Malay as their national language while putting aside Javanese pride.

Javanese are not Malay.
Both however are classified under 'Austronesian', which in the end shared a parent from Africa, that we call modern human.

Javanese is considered as "Constitutional Malay" as defined in Article 160 & 153 of Malaysian Constitutions, simple because they're Muslim and culturally similar. Unity and brotherhood are often cited for the reasons.

Singapore adopts above similar approach.

Indonesia clearly define and differentiate between both, and the stark difference cannot be more obvious.

I don't know why they Malays are always in denial that they are not the original people on the "Malay Peninsula". Does not make them less Malaysians, does it? Read the history of Prince Parameswara who founded the Sultanate of Melacca around 1400. He was a MALAY prince from Srivijaya, and Malay here designs an ethnic entity (or race if you like) found in many parts of South East Asia. It is only in Malaysia that Malaysian Malays are a constitutionally defined group of Muslim Malaysian citizens of Austronesian origin. The origin of this ethnic group is primarily in the Malay Peninsula, and parts of Sumatra and Borneo but nowadays you can also find Malays in Singapore, and if you look further to South Africa you will find the Cape Malays, and then look at the Cocos Malays...

For political reasons Javanese, who are Muslims, are often considered Malays (I live in Sabah where this thing bears interesting fruits, anybody from neighbouring countires and who is Muslim, or sometimes not, calls him or herself a Malay to reap governmental benefits, and the government does reap its benefits, too), but I am glad to read that there are some proud Javanese Malaysians who set the record straight. Thanks Poison Ivy!

There is nothing wrong with one's ethnic background. If you are Malay in Malaysia, that should mean that you come from the Malay stock (not indigenous but here since a good moment, see above!) and of course you are Muslim. If you are Javanese you are Javanese and if you are Dusun you are Dusun (you can be a Muslim, but that does not make you a Malay, just as an Indian Muslim will always be an Indian and not a Malay), etc. Really! Should not even be a question, never a discussion.

If you consider the racial features as well as the linguistic similarities between the various ethnic communities inhabiting the Malay Peninsula and the islands of Indonesia, then of course you will have to say that the Javanese are also Malays. Everything else is just politics, chauvinism and racial hatred and jealousy.

Not really ..

Javanese is the name of the people living or originated from the Indonesian island of Java ..

And Malay's are the people living or originated from the country of Malaysia.

Even if they use a very similar language which is the "bahasa Malaysia or Indonesia", they are not originated from the same country.

I am Javanese and never do regard my self as malay. not for political reason, jealousy... but IN FACT of the history itself that say that I am different from malay, as minang different from acehnese, as acehnese different from ambon, as ambonese different from papuan, as papuan different from sundanese, and so on.

I WILL NEVER EVER see my self as MALAY... not that I am proud of being Javanese, but that's just my root, my identity. It likes you are chinese, you never be japanese.
