The reason why all people don't speak the same lanuage is that in the dim dark past when humans were beginning to learn to talk they were not all together. They were beginning to be scattered about a little. No doubt when talking all began and it probably began about 100,000 - 50,000 years ago when Neanderthal began a primitive language and Homo Sapiens began theirs, humanity was very scattered. As language developed people spread across the earth. Therefore languages developed seperately from each other. By the time people came in contact with each other by means of boats and caravans-language had been synthasised into the various types somewhat of what is today.
Of course people did not know or record their early history so many myths evolved. The tower of Babel speaks of Nimrod wanting to built a tower to heaven and God smiting him down and confusing languages. Other myths speak of people trying to besiege the gates of the gods and the gods confusing their languages as punishment. And through time some people did learn other languages.
However you might have thought that enough time has passed and human beings, being intelligent, could and would have worked out a way of a universal language. Howeve it is difficult to give up the language you have been brought up with. And there were nations and powers- each thinking it the best one. And with the rivalries and wars-the best we accomplished was for some of us to learn other languages.
There was an attempt in the 1960s sponsered by The United Nations to introduce a universal artificial language called ESPERANTO. However language is a natural thing that has evolved naturally and most people would rather speak a language that other , living peoples speak, as well as their own language. The only sucsess this ESPERANTO had was with a few elite trendites whoes heads are buried in the sand away from the real world. People like things to happen naturally and for a good reason. Not merely because a half a***d organisation says so.
But there is one language that is developing as the language of international commerce, diplomacy, entertainment and war. This language is English. It is because for the first time in history there have been two great powers that have sucseeded one another and have been international. THE BRITISH EMPIRE and THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Even when Byzantium sucseeded Rome, the Byzantines quickly adopted the Greek rather than the Latin language. Hence we may have , especially at this technological and international period of our history, a language natural and developing enough to be finally accepted by all. The reason why there has been so far no same language. Language was developed over time and naturally by an intelligent creature with dignity- humans. It is one of peoples' rights and dignity. The reason why no language has become universal- NO LANGUAGE UNTIL NOW HAS EARNT THE RIGHT TO BE.

Because of isolation. Before we had mass media abilities like today we were more isolated, so words change slightly depending on the local slang. This mutates into different languages altogether, though many have the same root language(like a lot of European language is based on Latin, so if you know Latin and the local variations you can understand parts of it).
Mass media is said to be shrinking the number of languages globally but I'm not sure it'll die out. However it does allow for the transfer of ideas and thus words to become easier. For example we know what Pokemon are even though they're not an English word.
But mass media cannot change the local effect. Take North America, we mostly speak English, yet Canadians sound different than the people of the USA and the variance also exists within the countries, even within cities. Here I can tell if someone is from farther up north based on their speech patterns. So language is always evolving. Even if we all spoke the same language we would still invent new things, which we'd name and thus that word would have to get around, so it would still change at different rates globally.
There's also theories that it evolved to let us know the difference between our own people and foreigners.
So again, it's caused by location and groupings of people.
Hope this makes sense.

Language is not a static thing. It is an interaction between people to explain each's reality to the other. Since all people don't see/hear/feel/taste/smell/ experience everything exactly the same, then each person has their own explanation for events and circumstances. When two people speak the same language, all that means is they have agreed that the same word means the same thing to them (like if I say dog you have a general idea of what I mean)
Language is constantly changing based on the experiences of the speakers. And, the same word can mean different things to different peoples based on their experiences. Also, when a speaker experiences a new event/circumstance in their life they need new words to explain it.

The majority of western languages are derivatives of an ancient language dubbed "Proto Indo-European" by linguists. As groups migrated from place to place in ancient times, they became isolated from the source of their culture. Over time, their customs and languages evolved independently. This can happen very quickly, as can be seen in the Romance languages, such as Spanish, Italian, Romanian, and French. Although a student will easily recognize the similarities in these languages, they are quite different. Yet all of them evolved in just 2000 years from Latin. Similarly, the English we speak here would be unintelligible in Britain just 1000 years ago.

It goes back to the days of the Bible, when they were building the tower of Babel. The people stopped listening to God and started worshiping Idols, and doing things that the Ten Commandments stated not to do. The were also going to build a tower to Heaven and try to take over so God made it so that none of them could communicate with each other.
