we need more opera

you were so popular when you were an opera singer and the classical wrold misses you so much!

most of the answers have basically put it into two categories: money or love.
Think about it- a pop star might make more money for a couple of years, and then what does she do, where an opera singer might sing for decades and wind up with that much money anyways.
I think you need to sort out what kind of music is in you. There are as many opportunities for making a spectacle of yourself in opera, or crying your eyes out, or complaining of unfaithful love, or swearing to be true, or spooning under the moon in June, as there are in pop music, so the transmission of emotion is not the issue. As far as the lyrics go, ok, some pop songs are also hopelessly old-fashioned already. I mean, some of the slang from the 70's?!?
Opera singing does take more work. There are no mikes and no sound technicians to beef you up, it's only you. Takes years of training and dedication.
I think it's better music, some of which has been around for a couple hundred years and still going strong.
First things first. If you want to sing AT ALL, take lessons from an accredited teacher. No on-line stuff, you need and want personal attention. Your pop voice will also benefit, because you will at least learn to sing without hurting that amazing mechanism that lives within us. Too many instant stars have no clue as to how their voice works, and wind up as patients in the ENT doctor's office, only to be told they need vocal rehab from the amount of abuse they have chosen to inflict upon themselves.
Be smart and take lessons!

Be a pop star you'll get more popularity and opera singer you won't become noticable plus opera singer is much too much work than a pop singer.

Depends how good you are? Any idiot can be a popstar but to be a opera singer you actually need some skill.

Um, there's a bit of a difference, but they do have one thing in common.....they both suck. Don't do either. Why not try being an estate agent and work for Foxtons. The greatest company in town!! You could get one of those mini coopers and drive around almost killing everyone. naughty naughty.
