It is not just 27 year old children that do that. There of all ages.
But your question can be better answered by understanding the relationship between parents and child. There are as many reasons as there are relationships.
Some don't know how to care for themselves...cooking, cleaning, laundry or any of the myriad tasks of living alone.
Or the responsibility of paying utilities and rent.
And I guess there are some that just have a great relationship.

Umm..because some 27 year olds are still college students. Especially if they're going to college after getting out of the military.
Me, personally, I'm 27, and I'm a full time college student, and I live alone. My parents are deceased, so I don't have that luxury. But even if my parents were alive, I don' t think I'd like still living at home at this age. Although, I've seen people well into their late 30's still living at home. Maybe they're just close to their families.

Because maybe thier parents just did not expect enough from them growing up. I think it could be the parents just fell short of it. Also the cost of living in some areas is so out rageous that they can't afford to live on thier own. Where I live a one bedroom apartment cost around $1200.00 per month, let alone hundreds of dollars for utilities. And then you have car payments and insurance. Of course a person has to eat and wear something. I think more and more families see the need to stay living together. As long as everyone is contibuting it can be a benefit for the family. I don't see my son moving out for awhile and that's ok-he contributes. It's expensive out there!! But just to live off of parents at that age is wrong. The parents have to expect more. I moved out when I was 18 as well-but times have changed.

Because they are too lazy or irresponsible to live their own lives and take care of their own responsibilities. Not all of them, but many adult children living with their parents have a drug and/or alcohol problem. If this is the case, they need to "hit rock bottom" before they will get any better. If parents are catering to this lifestyle by letting them live and eat there then the adult child will never desire to seek help. But, it could be just pure laziness or maybe they're scared to move out on there own.

I think because rent is free and they feel more safe. Some 27 year olds (I don't think they can be considered children anymore) like to have a family, career, and move out on their own, some never want that responsibility. I moved out right when I turned 18. Yes!!!

I am 27 and I do not want to live at home at all! Some kids never learned how to be responsible. I think this comes from the parents. You have to teach your kids to be responsible adults or they will be at home forever. I had to teach myself. My parents did not teach me. They did this because they would love for to live with them for th rest of their life. I can't do that. If you have a 27 year old at home living off you, you are letting them do it. You can't blame them for a free ride you are providing.

Because they have no motivation to get out on their own and live their own lives and make their own way. It is too easy to stay where you have a comfortable room, free meals and someone else to do your laundry. It's time to make them get up and get out or they will never leave home! Sometimes it takes a push in the right direction from the parents. The parents have to stop being enablers.

Because its cheaper
You may have to pay a little board but its nothing compared to living costs now (rent, food, electricity ect)
Plus there is someone there to do your washing and stuff haha
Personally i like my freedom but others feel they dont need to and they would prefer to be looked after then to go out into the world by themselves

I'm 24 and I DONT live with my parents. Anyone who still does at that age obviously is smarter than their parens because their parents are dumb enough to let them. GET a JOB like the rest of us! Unless your kids are going to school full time, or taking care of a family member at home, there is no need to still be living with them at that age.

Because they were raised that way,
it is a brutal world and they are scared of it,
people let them some may need them for protection,
no job skills,
the parents are dysfunctional and the child is doing everything,
they are a rural family.
