For example, when people see someone or something that is non mainstream or ecclectic or "campy", they say "oh that's so gay". Ok, why is "gay" the word of choice here? I never hear people go around saying, "Oh that's so Asian" or "That's so straight" or "That's so black"...so why did people choose "gay" and why has it become so popular?

Because while we still have racism, it is looked down upon in society to be openly racist. However, you can't really say the same for homophobia. A lot of fathers especially praise their sons for being homophobic and instill it in their children (mothers too, but more so the fathers), teachers do so, even parishioners & pastors. Just look at the religious right-wing groups, they have no problem hating gays. Most people in general still think its okay to hate them. (Of course it isn't).

in the old days the term was sodomite, and people used it as an insult because it was the general conensus that sodomy was wrong, then it was homosexual and people used it as an insult because it was the general consensus that homosexuality was wrong, now its gay and people use it as an insult because it is the general consensus that homosexuality is wrong. just in case you don't get my drift, people still think its wrong! so gay has become the new word for wrong. No matter how many euphemisms homosexuals come up with it will still mean WRONG to the general population.

That was popular before, "gay," meant being homosexual. "Gay" can also mean silly or happy - it's not meant to be offensive, and sometimes people in older generations slip.

Because mother f*ckers like to label sh!t! It's pitiful and it's ignorant! But what are you going to do? You have to ignore it and keep moving! People of every nationality, hangout groups, age groups have their own language. You know the one I use to hate the hell out of? And forgive me if you all think this is labeling but I remember when the word "Like" was used 15 times in a 7-10 word sentence! That sh!t almost drove me to slapping the piss out of someone and going to jail! Example:
And I was like, and he was like, but I said to her and she was like.
Now if it were up to me back then, I would have been like
"***** PLEASE BE QUIET"! BECAUSE "I LIKE NEED A DAMN BREAK ON YOUR CONVERSATION!" BECAUSE I'M HAVING THIS MOMENT AND FEELING AS THOUGH I'M ABOUT TO "LIKE" GET FINGERPRINTED BY "LIKE THE DAMN POLICE PRECINCT"! LMAO!

Please spare us. We use the term "Welsh" to describe someone who doesn't follow on a bet, "Vandal" for someone who destroys property, "Hun" for others we see as barbarians, "Indian Giver" for someone who goes against their word, "Dutch" for paying your own way, How many more?
Gays call themselves gay. How can you insult someone who gives themselves that name?
