I believe in education, self image, and peer pressure. This will work far better then any other method in building a teens self esteem so they won't try drugs.

Yes, there is a way to reduce drug use among teens.

As a parent you should involve yourself in your kids' lives as much as possible. Good communication with the kids is paramount...this takes some skill by the way. Family activities of all sorts can help achieve this though.

We go camping, ride our motorcycles (sometimes as just our family, and other times with the local motorcycle club). We go rock climbing, to Six Flags usually a couple of times each season, swimming, fishing, frizbie golf, shoot potato guns, etc. For wintertime, we do stuff like innertubing, ice skating, snowboarding. I even play video games with my kids.

Some activities are free, and some cost plenty. But anyone can find free and cheaper things to do with their kids.

Another thing...If you can get your kid interested in a sport, that will often curtail drug activity. You can't do well in a sport if you do drugs. It also will improve their diet if they get serious about a sport.

Stop teaching them how to use it. Drug use has steadily been on the rise, especially in the middle class, since the creation of the "DARE" project and SADD's attempt at alcohol reduction has fallen short as well. The well meaning program developers inadvertently created a "norm" to substance abuse, by revealing the "accepted people" who use and abuse. This introduction removed allot of the fear and made drug use less of a loss and more of a "phase". If the programs really wanted to help they would encourage the arts and fitness programs that were cut to fund them and step out of the class room.

Take the kids on field trips to rehab hospitals to meet long term drug users.

Hold the parents responsible for what their children do while on drugs.

Toss troublemakers out of schools.

Yes. Make drugs legal, and regulated and taxed.

It's harder for people to buy something if it is legal and regulated, than if it is entirely illegal.

Other than that, education is the only reasonable prevention.
Teaching them about the dangers. Not just "drugs are bad". But specific risks and side-effects, and let them choose.

Making it a taboo subject does nothing but increase the allure and the risk.

Give them something to do. Drugs are often used to cure boredom, so give the kids something to do.
