Misuse is using something for the wrong purpose or in the wrong way, but to no real detriment to anyone (like taking ibuprofen for nasal congestion, or using a baseball bat as a hammer).
Abuse is a kind of misuse, but it involves some kind of substantive detriment to someone or something (like physically harming someone, overdosing on drugs, or using a baseball bat as a weapon).

Abuse is done repeatedly over and over again and in a violent way...drug abuse, using drugs all the time and doing anything to get them...misuse is like...less violent and not doing it has much and usually is realated to a product...
They kinda mean the same thing...but abuse is a harsher term than misuse...like you never heard wife 'misuse' it's always abuse...but if you read on the back of a can of paint it'll say something like...'the misuse of this product is anything other than its intended use'

I would think the "abuse" means deliberate actions against person or thing and that "misuse" means accidentily using the item wrong. Also "abuse " may refer to someone or something that is living, as apposed to "misuse" of an object like a car or tool.

The difference is quantitative. If you are given a budget for your department, and you use the fund for personal expenses once. That is misuse. If you use department funds to pay your mortgage every month. THAT is abuse.
