I am 39 weeks and i'm not sure what exactly a contraction is, I feel cramps and sharp pains near my pelvis, Is that a contraction? Everyone says that its when your stomach tightens and then loosens but i haven't had any sort of that feeling. Could someone please explain what a contraction feels like..........

Labor contractions are the periodic tightening and relaxing of the uterine muscle.Contractions are often described as a cramping or tightening sensation that starts in the back and moves around to the front in a wave-like manner. Others say the contraction feels like pressure in the back. During a contraction, the abdomen becomes hard to the touch. In the childbirth process, the work of labor is done through a series of contractions. These contractions cause the upper part of the uterus (fundus) to tighten and thicken while the cervix and lower portion of the uterus stretch and relax, helping the baby pass from inside the uterus and into the birth canal for delivery.

When you start having contractions, you will know it! Those sharp pains are probaby just your baby going into position. A contraction is like period cramps times a million. It lasts for what feels like an eternity- but its only probably 30 seconds. It will probably be the most painful sensation you will ever feel.

Its a squeezing sensation. You stomach will get rock hard and then loosen. A general cramping is usually not contractions
