Talk to people, ask where they got their's, lots of people have tattoos and can tell you about a place.
Also good artists will have portfolios of their work, so go into a good shop and ask to look at a portfolio, tell them you want inspiration.
Another thing is it's sort of a medical procedure, and a good artist will treat it as such, with changes of gloves and autoclaved equipment. Some places are regulated depending on where you live, so ask if there's regulations for the area.
Ask questions, a good place will answer them all truthfully. No question is stupid.

It depends where you live of course but go to the local tattoo shops and look at the artists book. He will ( if he is worth a crap as a tattoo artist anyway :-) ) have a portfolio of some of the work hes done. Be picky its going to be on you for the rest of your life. But also be open to ideas while its going on your body..he ..or she...is the artist putting it on and they have a right to its interpretation even though they are selling it to you. Make sure you pick something and think about it for awhile. I didn't get my first tattoo until I was 29 I think and I'm glad I waited. I am 36 now and am comfortable with every tattoo I have on me. I have even drawn the last two myself and worked with the artist to bring them to fruition. Good luck and have fun getting inked. :-)

All tattoo artists, should have a portfolio. They should have original artwork as well as pictures of clients.Don't go anywhere that doesn't. Ask them what type of work they specialize in. Most can draw anything, but some have special techniques. If they do not have a portfolio, don't bother. They don't take them selves seriously, why should you? know what I mean?
Always do your research. Tattoo's are fun and yes, can be rebelious, but it is also on you for life. Doing your homework is the best Idea. Good luck!
