It would be too good to be true. Hence illegal. There are no books online that are going to be still under copyright yet available for you to read "free" online. With the slight exception of using programs at your local library. For example, programs like NetLibrary if available through your library--using a user name and password--you can read or "check out" ebooks. But most of these will be through your library and go through one or two registration processes. And even then they won't be downloadable.

Bad news, but the only free and legal books you can get online are usually classics. But, not to worry. Here's a place that lists Contemporary Fiction http://ipl.org/div/subject/browse/hum60.60.61/. Some authors, like Cory Doctorow http://www.craphound.com , have their work on their websites free for download as well.

For modern short stories, try Short Stories East of the Web http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/ They've got humor, romance, horror, crime - you name it, they've got it. The New Yorker's website http://www.newyorker.com/ also has short stories.

But please - the classics aren't dumb, they just take time to read. If you ever get up the motivation to try some, go to http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/ or http://www.gutenberg.org , both of which feature all the classics a reader could ever hope for. Even if you never touch these links of your own volition, at least you'll have something to fall back upon if, say, you forgot to bring back your novel study book home.

The bottom line - your public library is still the best place around for free books to read

Hope this helps!

PS The sites I've listed above are all free and legal, so no worries there. I use 'em all the time.

As soon as you are willing to go to work everyday for free and not expect to ever be paid, I am sure many authors will do the same for you.

Perhaps if you read less teen nanny crap and more classics, you would have more respect for writers. :(
