I bang on the window, have hung windchimes, and sent my small poodle out to "get um", but no avail, they are eating all the seed , 25 pounds in a few days, and scare all the others away. Can anyone give me some advice on how to keep the black birds away? My husband wants me to stop feeding them, but I just can't do it!

Help me, give me something to work with. I know you guys can help me.

THANK you all for any good hearted advice.

Hi,

There are a few thing you can try.

1. Remove your feeders for a few days, maybe a week. They may move on to another source.

2. Use feeders without perches or catch trays. This may make it harder for them to feed.

3. Keep the area under your feeders as clean as possible.

4. Change the type of food for a while. Maybe to suet.

Good Luck,
John

Actually, you are not suppose to have feed in your bird feeders in the spring of summer. Only in the winter when food is harder for them to find. Sorry to burst your bubble of fun.

Instead plant a tree in front of or near your fav window. One that produces small berries, this way you can still watch the birds come to eat in the fall.

You should make the feeder a treat for the birds, not a regular occurance. If you would like, you could get a bird bath for your enjoyment. Just make sure to dump the water and get fresh every other day so you dont have to worry about mosquito larvae. Hope this helps, and you really should not be feeding the birds on a regular basis this time of year.

Good luck and good health to you and your neighbourhood birds!

There really isn't anything you can do. I've looked into everything with no luck. All you can do is wait it out. In a few weeks they will start laying their eggs and they will be gone until next year. My local Fish and Game said we could shoot them but, being a bird lover, it is not an option. The only thing that keeps mine away for awhile are the squirrels. I have a feeder for them along with the bird feeders and the blackbirds will not come while the squirrels eat. The squirrels will chase them away.

Try Safflower seeds. You may have to mix what you are currently using to all safflower so that your other birds will get used to it. Here is some info about the seeds:

Safflower Seeds

Similar to sunflower seeds, safflower seed attracts many beautiful species of birds to your feeders and is an economical highly nutritious choice. Safflower seeds are also a wonderful choice if you are trying to keep the furry creatures away from your feeders. Squirrels and other mammals do not like the taste of these bitter seeds but you’ll be sure to attract many species of birds with these fresh all around seed. Colorful songbirds such as Chickadees, House and Purple Finches, Nuthatches, Rose-breasted, Evening and other Grosbeaks, Titmice, and especially Northern Cardinals will flock to your safflower feeder.

all you can do is get feeder with smaller access to the seed.

what birds are you hoping to attract?

you may just need to not be so picky, all birds need food, but some actually prefer feeding different ways.

read up on the birds you want to attract vs the birds you don't want. find their feeding patterns and preferences and you may set the feed out in the manner that will help your predicament.

Unfortunately, you have to accept all the riff raff if you want to feed birds. Why not stop? None of the good birds are getting fed anyway.

What do you have against blackbirds???
If there were any other indigenous bird species around your home, they would have gone for it too.
Another thing...I don't know where you live, but if it's still "wintry", those might just be Juncos that will eventually head back north in the Spring.
