What causes hiccups primarily is the solar plexus rubbing on the sternum. What causes this is a sudden burst of gas, like carbon dioxide (as from soda) basically an expansion of the underlying muscle tissue. Swallowing the wrong way can do this.
One neat trick I found was to breath in deep and arch my back. If you can relieve the pressure between the solar plexus and the sternum a bit, it will stop the cycle. Warm tea helps alot, too. BELCHING does not, not really. Soothe the gas and you alleviate the problem.

I am the one who asked this question this is just anther username I use for Yahoo. Yes I am Candi-o, and yes this is a real cure for the Hic Ups!
Ok here it is The ture cure for Hic ups!
You need to drink a gulp of Pepsi, or Coke, anything that has a good strong fiz!, Flat soda will not work!
1.Take a gulp of sada pop, but DO NOT SWALLOW IT!
2. swish the soda pop around your mouth untill its nothing but bubbles!
3. Swallow the bubbled up soda pop and swallow it with a deep strong forcable swallow, dont hurt yourself but give it some force to get it down..
4. The bubbles in pop will mix with the stuck bubble causing the Hic Ups.
5. You will feel the Hic Up Bubble, and the soda pop bubbles mix, and you will need to burp.
6. So just burp, get it out of your system!
7. This usually works on the first try, never have I had to to do it more then once, but repeat if you need to!

I don't think there are any real cures. Hear about that 16 year old girl in Florida that had the Hic Ups for like 3 weeks stright? She tried every single way to stop her hicups. And she couldn't.

"Numerous home remedies for hiccups exist. The reason that these remedies are thought to work is that carbon dioxide build-up in the blood will stop hiccups, which is what happens when you hold your breath. If the vagus nerve that runs from the brain to the stomach is stimulated, hiccups can also be alleviated (this is what is happening when you drink water or pull on your tongue)."

You need two people. One to give you a full glass of water as you push your ears closed with your fingers and drink it. Two burps later, you are cured.

I've always taken in a deep breath, held it until I could swallow 7 times. It's hard but can be done and usually works.

As several responders have already mentioned, something sweet in the mouth tends to relax you & your hiccuping mechanism.
Sugar, coke, M & M's all qualify. It just has to be sweet.
