It's not that black and white - it would be pleasant to believe that most Muslim countries don't have Sharia law but most apply it in some way and for some, that's the law.

Read the story to get your own answer. She is not getting punished for getting raped, she is getting punished for breaking the law by being alone with men who were not her relatives.

A woman who is raped is not a criminal under Sharia, the rapist is.

However, A man and a woman alone together who are not related are both committing a crime.

A woman who claims that she has been raped when she wasn't is also commiting a crime.

A very big problem with Sharia law is that rape must be witnessed. No witnesses implies consentual sex. That is where the problem comes in and why rapes are rarely reported to the police.

BTW, I am not in favor of Sharia law so don't shoot the messanger.

As another person pointed out, she's a criminal for her actions leading up to the rape. She broke the law of the land by riding in a car with a man not of her family. If she had obeyed the law, she wouldn't have been raped.

It sounds a LOT like the US. It's well known rapists exist in this country, yet millions of young women get drunk around strangers, late at night, without a buddy to watch their backs. They're easy prey, and bring a lot of it upon themselves. No, they're not "asking for it", but they shouldn't be surprised either. They might as well leave their car windows down with the keys in the ignition in a shady neighborhood.

Such laws as the one this unfortunate lady broke were designed to protect her purity, which is highly valued in her culture. She's a prime example of what happens to those who don't heed the old teachings.

Becase that's what the law says.

Do I think such a law is barbaric and unconscionable? Yes.
But that's what the law says, based on centuries of tradition.

Fortunately, the vast majority of Muslim communities and countries don't enforce that law. Just like the vast majority of Christian communities and counties don't stone people to death for adultery. An equally barbaric law.

To Steve C, you really need to look up stuff about CAIR (the Council on American Islamic Relations). They basically want a muslim caliphate in this country.

To coragryph, I think you missed the point. You are quick to point to Judeo/Christian tradition with regard to adultery. Last time I check the definition of rape, it wasn't consentual. Big difference, wouldn't you agree?

Because in Islam, women are not beings but belongings. So, they do not care at all about them. I know some women will claim they are happy and fulfilled in Islam, but that's just because their menfolk have told them they have to.
