Yes. Though just for comparison, basically it's like pushing really hard for a bowel movement. That is why many women get hemmoroids during labor - from the pushing.

Yes and no. Your body will tell you to push, and you will feel the urge, but sometimes, woman fight against it or are just too tired and don't push with the right muscles.

Only listen to your body (this is if you are going natural), not to any docs that tell you when to push. You wait until you can't wait anymore, then at the peak of the contraction, you bear down using your pelvic floor. That is why it is so important to do kegals during pregancy. It teaches you what muscles to use. All other muscles (like your legs, arms, and face) should be relaxed. If they aren't, you will just tire yourself out.

I was 22 and pregnant with my first child, alone, in Germany....I had taken no classes on child rearing and was entirely unprepared and scared....when I was in labor, the nurses kept telling me to let them know when I was ready to push, and I kept thinking "How the hell am I going to know that???".....then after about 2 hours, I just got the urge to (as another user put it) take the biggest dump of my life, and it was time to push!!! I just started pushing, I had no idea what I was doing, but it's kind of trial and error....different women find that different positions or different breathing techniques work best for them. I personally pulled my legs way back into my chest and curled up as tight as I could while pushing using my ribs to help push the little boy out lol. It worked! =)

Forget "instinctive", it's practically impossible to not push. The urge to push will be so strong, you won't be able to help but do so, even if you wanted to. At childbirthing classes, they will show you a breathing technique that is the only single way to fight the urge, if in case the doctors need you to not push for a moment when the baby's being delivered.

It will feel like you HAVE to push - A LOT of pressure.
Even with an epidural you should be able to tell that something has changed and that something is different and you need to do something about it.
I have 3 kids. 1 without an epdiural and 2 with. I could tell with all 3.
Good luck!

I had this same thought when I was pregnant, how will I know when to push, and how will I know how to push. Its hard to explain, but you just know. I was just about to have an epideral, I was at 6 cm, and as I was waiting for the gentleman to come to do the epideral, I just felt weird, and said I need to push, sure enough it was time to push. They help you so much, tell you when to push, and when to stop. Don't worry, you will know when to push, and how. Good Luck

The doctors will tell you when to push . You have to be dialated all the way to keep from harming you and the baby . also to make sure the cord isnt wrapped around the babys neck , it is common so dont freak out. the doctor and nurses will be in the room with you keeping up with the progress in your dialation and your heart rate and the babys. you will be just fine but dont push until they tell you too , which it is hard not too , but still wait for them to give the ok. take care and good luck

Yes; not only is it instinct, but also think "pooping". It's just the same, and in fact you will probably have a b.m. on the bed; don't stress about it, the people have seen it all before though it might gross out your husband.

Yes you will.
have you ever had a cramp during your period that was hurting so bad you stopped and kind of pushed against it? maybe even held your breath during the really crappy parts?
That is how you push.
