I was originally interested in IUD because I didn't want anything w/hormones...but, hormonal IUD is starting to look more appealing!

I'm looking for pro's and con's, side effects, etc.
And is it bad to douche a few days before getting one inserted?

Definetely hormonal! The copper IUD's tend to have a lot of negative side effects, while the hormonal does release hormones, it is usually a very small amount therefore you usually don't experience many bad side effects.
You should ask your doctor about douching, although I probably wouldn't

I wanted to get away from hormonal things as well... had been on depo for years, then wanted soemthing different after I had my kids.

The copper one has worked fine for me. The hormones are what mess with the duration of your periods and all, so the copper one has gotten me back to the way my body does things on it's own. Periods are a bit heavier but, the hormonal side effects are not there and that is what I was going for.

No more funky headaches, mood swings, that feeling I'd have for a week or so following a shot. I have felt more in control of myself, more clear headed and just better in general since switching to the copper iud.

The biggest plus I can mention is one thing that got me thinking about the copper one in the first place... the hormonal types of birth control make it incredibly hard to lose weight, a nurse once mentioned that the steroids in the depo would keep it difficult. Since going off hormonal methods and using the copper iud, I have lost 40 pounds and am headed towards another 10. This weight loss happened over a long period of time but I had strugged with losing weight for EVER while on hormonal methods. So, yes, I somewhat attribute my weightloss to not having additional hormones running through me.

I would recommend the copper one over the hormonal one any day... I know how I felt on the hormones, and I don't feel that way anymore.

My 2 cents.

I have Mirena IUD (hormonal) ......I love it. I couldn't take the pill because it made me so mean my family couldn't live with me. I haven't had any reaction like that with Mirena. I had spotting first few months I got it, but that is the worst side effect I have had. I don't have heavy painful periods anymore either. I highly recommend getting it.

As far as douching........you really shouldn't douche at all. If that is something you insist on doing you should ask the Dr about that.
