The second one could be an expansion slot to allow you to add another harddrive if you wanted. Or, you could have a removeable CD and Floppy drive set that goes in there.

Most likely your Hard-drive is partitioned for more flexibility and for optimised reading of the file structure.
This is a software modification and it is performed with tools such as "Partition magic", but don' try it at home if you don't know what you're doing. You may erase all your data in the process.

the second one is there so you can add another hard drive. Depending on what size yours came with you may need more space or some people have the second one in it and use it in case the first one fails.

Because the manufacturer didn't fit one. They often put extra slots in, in order to make it possible to increase space without having to remove your old one. It's also usefull for creating back-up harddisks.

Just because the laptop comes with space for two hardrives, doesnt mean it comes wtih two. It just means yuo have room to expand. Its like RAM. Most computers you buy have room for more RAM than thy come with
