I have read a lot of articles that say not getting enough folic acid can increase the risk of birth defects, especiall neural tube defects. Everything I've read says that you need it most within the first 28 days of pregnancy, which is before you have even realized you're pregnant. As soon as I found out, I started taking prenatal vitamins, but I definitely wasn't getting much folic acid at all before then. Does a deficiency in folic acid pose a large risk for birth defects?

supposedly yes. both of my pregnancies I was unaware of until I was two months along, and they were fine. people have been having babies for centuries... dont get too scared about the things you read. its natural, its normal. even starving women in Africa still have babies... :) relax, dont let them scare you! good luck with your pregnancy and baby, and God bless!!!

Yes, a folic acid deficiency means the baby could be deficient as well, and that can cause birth defects.

Just keep on taking the vitamins every day now.

At around 8 to 11 weeks, organs are forming, so you might be okay since you are already taking them.

i wouldn't panic - but i always took a multivitamin geared towards women - they have alot of folic acid.

make sure you keep up your prenatals, and maybe mention it to your doc
