Fresh, I know exactly what you're talking about!
I compared several... I was un-impressed, then I started to write my own code... that took too long.
Then I found http://jquery.com . I downloaded it and read every line of code, downloaded a bunch of sample... I knew this was the simplest most complete cross browswer ajax/dom/special effects library I'd ever seen!
I can whip up and ajax app in minutes instead of hours!

i dont know what open source script for AJAX means... if you are just looking for some AJAX code then check these links out:
