Since Vista is a new release, XP price will likely come down, so it will be most affordable.

Get over Windows98 :-) it has since years no support from Microsoft; XP Professional should be your first choice. It has the best support for hardware and software in compare to other Operating systems and you'd not be seeing more of the blue screen you used to face under Windows 98 :due to the old filesyetem FAT32.
XP would mean for you more stability, enhanced security through the file system, reliability and most important user friendliness.
Regards

Switch to Linux, it's free. It ran just fine on my old Win98SE box and it ran faster than XP ever would.

You can download ubuntu, which is an ISO-CD image. After you download it, you burn it onto a CD. You will have to go into your computer BIOS at that point --> Restart --> Delete Key, (next to number pad) to get into BIOS and make sure the Boot sequence includes the CD reader before the C drive.

Then, you can restart with ubuntu in the CD reader and try it without changing a thing on your computer. If you like it, it will install it. There is a great worldwide community of people that will help with your questions.

If you go XP, you will have a nightmare upgrading a borderline machine.

If you try ubuntu, it will only cost you download time and a blank CD.

I'm thinking if you're running windows 98 your system is pretty old, so it might be wise to just get a new sytem preloaded with either XP or Vista.

Depends on your current system specs.. check ram requirements for any upgrade you wish to do, as well as cpu speed, etc..
without doing these things, you may find that you've compounded any problems you already have.
