You probably have bad piston rings or gaskets so you are burning oil. It will eventually ruin your engine. In the short term, if you have mandatory emissions testing where you live, your will undoubtably fail it next time. So, either get several hundred dollars worth of engine work, a new car, or move somewhere where they don't have emissions testing.

What color is the exhaust? If its blue, your piston rings are giving out, causing the oil to ignite and burn in the combustion chamber. Bad news if you let it go on further. If its black, you may be burning a lot of excess fuel, meaning a maladjusted carburator or the timing is off. Not so bad but needs a check s.a.p.
