Well on tv judge shows, the show pays the damages up to
5 grand. Its part of an agreement for the defendant to come on the show and a law created by the Actor's Guild union that states that certain entertainment shows shows pay people. In a court of law outside of tv, a judgment is against that person. IF the person doesn't pay, a lien can be placed against personal property such as car titles and homes. So if that person ever sells, the judgment money will go towards the settlement first.

The Courts do not act as collection agencies.

The party awarded can request liens, lis perdens, and the like, or turn it over to a collection agency - if you can find one that will accept the debt.

One example how to "beat" paying a court award is to use the example of OJ Simpson. He's been rather artful and crafty of not paying, yet living the good life...

Good luck...

The court has the authority to order a lien, or to garnish their wages, or even to seize property if absolutely necessary.

So, if the losing party does not pay what they owe within a reasonable time after the judgment, the winning party can go back to the court and ask the court to take stronger measures to compel payment.

That is a burgeoning work opportunity, capturing payments that have been ordered by courts but remain unpaid.

More lawyers, court time and heart felt pleas for leniency follow non-payments than the actual original monetary awards....trust.

Cry a river. Has OJ ever paid a dime?

The people on those shows get paid by the show itself.

In normal cases, you're pretty much SOL if they don't pay, you can however get a lien against them, but you aren't likely to get much
