They started out Punk, but eventually turned into more of a Pop Rock band.

I think the Punk scene is the easiest genre out there to lose your "title" in. Punk never used to be about getting popular, it was just about giving a middle finger to everything else and extreme expression.

But once bands like Blink & Green Day came around and started actual caring about catchy hooks and everything, they got big. And with Punk, it seems like once you get the huge attention then you're accused of "selling out."

Once they got to the point of cranking out radio single after radio single, it was too late to save them.

yes, Green Day are classified as punk mostly. They are one of the biggest punk bands in the 20th century following the footsteps of The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash. They will be one of the best for a long time yet.

Its both. One year they called their tour the "Pop Disaster Tour". Their old music was very punk, but then they started changing a bit and sounding pop. They have said so in interviews. To the guy above me that said "def not punk"... WRONG!

Never really proper punk, in the terms of hardcore punk in the 70s/ early 80s . they are certainly Rock now, with punk influence.

Pop? Never.

nothing is pop unless the majority of the music community listens to them. which they do, so yea its pop but i dont think they hold on to much of their punk roots anymore.
