You need to fix a rope around the tree, and then atatch that rope to another tree of equal or greater diameter. I cant spell atatch but you cant either.

first cut out some of the top of the tree... you want to limit the amount of tree you have to cut down... so the fewer the branches the better... this will also help if the tree leaning one way or the other... the less top heavy it is the better control you have...once that is done.. get 2 more rope and tie it to the top of the tree....each of the other rope should be on opsite sides of each other.. think guide lines

and then get a long anchor pin hammer the pin into the ground and tie the rope to the anchor pin.... pull the rope as tight as you can get it... and then pull some more... tie a second rope to the top of the tree as well... then cut a small v into the base of the tree... and tighten the first rope again... the v should be facing not only the rope but the direction you want the tree to fall..... keep making the v bigger and bigger,... every few minutes re-tighten the rope... the tree should start leaning toward the pin... once your break the 1/2 mark of the tree trunk rememeber to watch and becarful.. when the tree decideds to fall.. it will be coming down and if you are in the way... well lets just say.. it will plant you in place.. use the other 2 ropes to pull it if the tree needs a little more help falling one way or the other

Stand back from the tree in the place you want it to fall , then from that direction walk to the tree and mark what is right in front of you. Then start cutting out a wedge (1/4 circle ) and the tree should go where you want it to but sometimes even
cutting it in the right place won't matter. If its leaning opposite
it will fall where most of its weight is leaning. I'd play it safe and hire someone to cut it that he can be blamed instead of you.

I'd tie a big rope to it and tie it somewhere sturdy away from the house. It would help to apply some force in the direction opposite of the house, like placing a big log of wood at an angle on the floor and supporting the tree (like the hypotenuse on a right triangle). We cut a big tree in front of our house last year, and what we did is we tied a STRONG cable to the tree and to the back of our neighbor's truck (the truck was far away to escape the tree, of course), and as we cut the tree he stepped on the gas, and caused the tree to fall away from the house.

Whatever way you choose to do it, I recommend you have at least 1 or 2 strong helpers in case things go wrong.

And of course, common sense is your best friend!

Good luck!

It it's a really big tree, I would hire a professional that is licensed and insured (especially if it is close to any buildings or wires). They will more than likely climb the tree and cut it down in sections using rope to guide where the sections fall.

If it's a big tree and near your house it would probably benefit your safety to hire a professional. Then you won't have to worry with it. I am an arborist and have had to clean up after several people trying to remove a tree themselves. It's just not smart, and there are plenty listings in the yellow pages for tree climbers.

Use ropes to guide and make your "v" cut in the proper
area to "aim" the fall -- don't do it on a windy day. If you
don't know what you're doing, hire it done -- it's much less
expensive in the long run.

The easiest way is to have someone else do it. Preferably someone who has a clue what they're doing.
