I was on the AOL website taking the "Are you smarted than a 5th grader quiz. The question they asked is "what is 3/4 + 1/2?" I got the question wrong!!! They said that the correct answer is 10/8. I had to find the common denomenator, 3/4= 6/8 and 1/2= 4/8. Then add the fractions. 6/8+4/8= 10/8.

But wait a second. The LOWEST common denomenator is 4! It would be 3/4 plus 2/4 which is 5/4 or 1.25. If you are looking at a pie chart and you add 75% plus 50%, that is 125%.

Surely AOL wouldn't make such a catestrophic error on their website, or is my math wrong?

When answering, please tell me whose answer is right and also if (and where) AOL apologizes for the error if they messed up the math problem. Thank you!

The exact answer as to who is right depends on what you want. No fear though; regardless of the ambiguity, you are right. The only question is whether AOL is right too.

As you noted, the fraction above equals 1.25 = 5/4. But it also equals 10/8. And it also equals 15/12. Note that I simply multiply by 1 = 2/2 = 3/3 = x/x.

So is AOL right? Well, their answer does indeed represent the sum of 1/2 + 3/4. So in this way, they are right. But so are you of course.

AOL's answer is not the simplest form, though. Your form, 5/4, is better.

So I would hazard a guess, and say that you are both right, but you are more right than AOL. :)

AOL is wrong because the least common denominator for the problem is 4

1/2=2/4

2/4+3/4=5/4
now 10/8 can be a right answer but it can be reduced to 5/4=1 1/4

1/2 + 3/4 =10/8 which is exactly equal to 1.25 or 5/4. It's all a matter of notation.

The LCD (Lowest common denominator) needs to be found for ALL terms on that side of the equation.

Thus, the LCD is 8.

However, AFTER you do the addition, you should reduce the fraction result...

SO, while you didn't do the LCD part correctly, your addition was correct...and AOL should have accepted the answer.

10/8 is the same thing as 5/4. Both could be considered the correct answer.
