Many depressed people drink alcohol--which is a depressant--and therefore, makes their depression worse.
The same is true of many drugs. People feel really down, and want to feel better. They do drugs, but after the initial high, they become more depressed.
Antidepressant drugs are a different story, except in some young people. Antidepressants have made new people out of some of the depressed population--they allow them to live normal lives. Unfortunately, in some teens antidepressants have a reverse effect. If these teens are severely depressed, doctors have to experiment with various meds until they find one that will work right on them.

It clearly is a dysfunctional behavior. The fact is drugs present an immediate solution (They make the person's problems go away, or at least give the illusion the problems have gone away). Unfortunately, while the person is indulging in this fantasy, the problem doesn't go away, and, in fact, in most cases, gets worse, because time is elapsing without the person doing any concrete to solve the problem. It's part of the vicious circle of addiction.

It's release therapy.
Drugs alter your state of mind, they enable you to enjoy yourself even if something has got you down. The only downside is that drugs are detrimental to your health and they are only a temporary fix.

you are right about making more problems for themselves in the long run,but when they are depressed they are looking for a real quick pick me up right then. They don't worry about the present
