The problem is the terrain that they offer is not consistant with any one state and the "clues" they have given are always suspect

The Simpsons is set in the fictional American city of Springfield. The state in which it is located has never been made clear, and it is not actually intended to exist in any specific state. Nevertheless, throughout the show's history, fans have tried to determine where Springfield is by taking the town's characteristics, surrounding geography and nearby landmarks as clues. As a response, the show has become intentionally deceptive about the state, and nearly every state and region in the U.S. has been both suggested and ruled out by conflicting evidence. Only once, in the season 11 episode "Behind the Laughter", the Simpsons are described as a “northern Kentucky family”, but since there are many counterexamples contradicting this statement in other episodes, this could just be seen as a teaser from the writers at the increasing curiosity of the fans. Groening has stated that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city he grew up in,[29] and the name "Springfield" was chosen because it is a common city name, appearing in more than thirty states. The geography of Springfield and its surroundings is seen to be flexible and has been shown to contain coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, and tall mountains, or whatever a story or joke requires.

The Simpsons family live in the town of Springfield. But, according to The Simpsons Archive, there are at least 71 nonfictional Springfields in 36 states around the country. This has left fans scouring the 350-plus episodes for clues to the town's exact location. Considering the enormous number of place names and geographical features referenced, this requires Ph.D.-level research. Many believe the show is set in Oregon, as creator Matt Groening grew up in Portland and many of the characters share names with that city's streets.

As far as I know, they've never mentioned WHICH Springfield "The Simpsons" is set in, but based on clues from the show, I'd guess in the midwest, even if Springfield, Illinois would be too easy. Little wonder that the 16 Springfields in the U.S. are vying to host the premiere of the Simpsons movie, which would eliminate the film from Oscar contention, since the premiere of an Oscar-nominated film has to be in New York or Los Angeles; a film can ALSO premiere in other cities and usually does, but first call has to go to NYC or LA.

They did a 'behind the music' type episode in which a voiceover put them in northern Kentucky. But in a recent episode, the states that border Springfield were listed as California, Texas, Massachussetts and North Dakota, or something similar.

I know what you mean...they are always giving clues every now and then as to where Springfield really is. I don't know what state it is though since I don't really care about following their clues, I just want them to come right out and show us!!

I think it's someplace East of the Mississippi, and West of the
Appalachian Mountains.
I am guessing Kentucky or Indiana.
Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee, Missouri, & Michigan have Shelbyvilles.
