Though the slogan "Jai Kisan" was coined during Shastri's regime, we were net importer of food grains in his times. It was Indira Gandhi who planned and pioneered the green revolution by promoting research in HYV (High Yielding Verities). She also nationalised the major banks to promote the concept of social banking which eventually improved the lives of millions of farmers and landless labourers throughout India.
No doubt, Shastri was clean. But strong? I doubt it very much. Just by signing the treaty at Tashkent, he cowardly washed away the priceless sacrifices of thousands of selfless soldiers.
India could regain lost confidence in its political leadership only after a deciding victory in Bangladesh during Indira Gandhi's tenure.
With due respect to Shastri and other clean leaders, I wish to stress that it is time when we analyze the history and learn from it and start thinking in favour of the nation and not just individeals.
