Rap is just quick (not always though) talking over rather basic music. In hip-hop, the vocals usually flow with the music. Like someone else has said, Rap, unlike Hip-Hop, isn't something you can dance to.

Hip hop music is a part of hip hop, a cultural movement that includes the activities of breakdancing and graffiti art, as well as associated slang, fashion and other elements. The popularity of music has helped to popularize hip hop culture, both in the United States and to a lesser degree abroad.

Good question. I think the true difference is the genre itself was created when people started talking RAPidly over music, hence the term. However, hip hop describes the music itself and the effect it has on its listeners. I prefer the term Hip Hop because it includes fast and slow paced lyrics.

Rap=Notorious B.I.G,Tupac and Lil' Kim's style's of music

Hip Hop= Nelly, Chris Brown and Black Eye Peas' style of music

Actually, its one in the same, no huge difference! Artists such as Common and Mos Def often refer to themselves as hip hop artists. I actually think they fall under the rap category but whatever, same difference!

....and I totally disagree w/ those who say you can't dance to rap. Y'all just don't know how to dance!
