Take your pick from any of the remaining United Nations languages: French, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, or Spanish.

None are as widespead as English except maybe for Chinese which is used in many Chinese communities around the world. That said, however, there are many dialects of Chinese that are mutually unintelligible.

If you try Arabic, you will be able to communicate in the Middle East and North Africa.

If you try Spanish, you will be able to communicate pretty much anywhere south of the United States as well as the Iberian Peninsula.

If you try Russian, you will be able to communicate in Russia and the former Soviet states in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

If you try French, you will be able to communicate in France, Northen and Central Africa and possibly the South Pacific, not to mention Quebec.

[Note: You will be able to communicate. This does not mean you will be able to speak well.]

It depends on where you want to go. If you want to go everywhere, stick with English. Otherwise narrow your travel plans and study the appropriate language.

English is a great language to learn. It is spoken in most of the modern world and is the basic modem for all of the technological vocabulary. A good second language to learn if you want to visit cesspools would be French. A good second language to speak if you desire to be in a very hospitable and respected civilization would be Japanese. If you want to break into the newest financial power world you should learn Chinese. Arabic is a good language also and would without a doubt give you a leg up on most US citizens doing business in the Middle East.

I honestly know french, and it helps alot, however i also know Arabic as well as English. (Since I live in Lebanon we are basically Trilingual, so its really helpful.) Furthermore Arabic to me is very essential since the Arab world nowadays, is growing and becoming an important region in the world, so it would be a good idea to learn Arabic (besides its pretty cool).
Nevertheless, French seems to be the most prestigious.
It all depends on where you are planning on going in the future..good luck
