if you dont care about the way it looks.. there are alot of things you can do...
from a metal water tank outside sitting in the sun with solar coils inside and a mirror skirt re-directing sunlight onto the tank...
water tank pipe running out in the sunlight and into a heated tank...
all and all these are not a 100% in winter time the water will be cold... just the way it is... gas heat is another way to go

Look into solar. Cheapest I can think of is black hose laying on the roof. But may not be the best! Why would you want to make your own water heater anyway?

i must echo the answer of your other member ,why would you want to build your own???
if you are looking for a method to save on hot water get a on - demand hot water system.
