Your computer is not recognizing the Ipod I think. The first thing that happens normally when you connect your IPod for the first time to the computer is that you will have a new hardware found message at the botton right hand corner. Then windows installs the generic drivers for IPod and then you can use the IPod as a external storage drive. At the same time if you already have ITunes installed (if you dont then you can freely download it from apple.com), then ITunes should automatically open by default.

If any of these dint happen then there is something wrong with either the USB port or the IPod, to rule out where the problem is, try to connect your nano to another PC... All the best...

You can also try this great software called Floola.. Floola is a freeware application to efficiently manage your iPod (any model supporting iTunes). It can be run directly from your iPod and needs no installation under Linux, Mac OS X and Windows (Windows Vista is supported). Floola supports all most common used features including podcasts! Take a look at the feature list to find out what it can do and feel free to suggest anything that might be missing.
