Modus Operandi - Method of Operation

2007-03-16 04:39:10 · answer #1 · answered by jamand 7 · 15 0

Modus Operandi, which means "the mode of operation" or "the means with which it was done" or "the way it worked".
Example: He always bought his victim a drink first. That was his Modus Operandi.
It doesn't have to pertain to crime. It can also be used to describe a person's "trade mark" habits.
Example: She always puts on her high heels before she puts on her dress. That's her Modus Operandi.

Modus operandi which if spelt correctly is Latin for the way it was carried out. In criminal [investigations it refers to the criminal's methods whether murder or burglary or whatever as similar methods used in separate offences could indicate the same person was responsible. The classic example of this is the way in which the victims of Jack the Ripper were mutilated.

"Modus operandi" which is Latin for 'mode of operation'.
It is used in police work to describe a criminal's characteristic patterns and style of work. It is also applied in fraud investigation when talking of behavior patterns that indicate specific types of fraud.

The term is also commonly used in English in a non-criminal sense to describe someone's habits or manner of working, the method of operating or functioning.

It came into the English language around 1645–55 from Latin
