What is he into?
If he's into sports, especially basketball, ask him who's going to win the NCAAA tourny this year. Talk about Ohio State, Florida, and the upset of Duke losing.
Is he in one of your classes, ask him a question relating to a class.

First find out what he likes. Then go to him and ask him a question that will start a conversation.
For instance, If he like maybe, cars ask him what is the most fascinating car to get to impress girls or guys. Let us know if you won that $20.00.
