Do they trap microbes that would otherwise be breathed in? I've heard it discussed once but it was inconclusive...

Probably neutral to more sanitary. The reason restaurant workers have to wear beard bras is that otherwise the hair could fall into food, the same as they have to wear nets over head hair. It has nothing to do with germs.

My husband had constant skin infections as long as he shaved. Since he grew a beard, his skin in very healthy. So preventing skin abrasions has meant more a sanitary face (in the sense of fewer colonies of harmfrul bacteria) for him. He never gets colds, but I don't know if the beard is a factor. I suppose it could be.

A beard is definitely sexier than sore, infected skin!

It depends on whether or not you want a permanent filter on your face. If you breathe through your nose the hairs in there do the same job. I'd have to say that beards are either neutral or slightly less sanitary. On the other hand, over millions of years of evolution men still have beards, so they've got to serve some purpose.

Having a beard is as sanitary as not having one. I know a lot of people who don't have beards, goatees or other facial hair who are slobs. It all boils down to personal hygiene and your pride in yourself and your appearance. I have had a beard or goatee since 1981, trimmed and looking good. I now have a goatee and I shave my head. Does that mean that people who have a head of hair are not as sanitary as me. No ... it depends on the person and their personal hygiene. Go for it!

I think that they are probably less sanitary, everything gets trapped especially ice cream crumbs from bread, pretzels and many other foods. My husband has had a beard for 35 yrs but he washes his face alot.

I've had a beard for the last 6 years. It's a little difficult to keep clean when eating messy food, like BBQ ribs. Just have to wash my face more often. I keep it trimmed and groomed and haven't had any issues with bacteria or anything.
