That seems a little soon, but it's not bad if you live in a snowy, or VERY rainy area.
It also depends what type of roads you drive on, If you do a lot of heavy braking, or off-roading.
That's a cheap repair compared to a differential going out due to water contamination.

i own a repair shop, and normally that isn't a common thing with that few of miles on one,but if you ave use it a lot to pull a trailer with or a boat it will make the wheel bearings go out a lot faster on any SUV or truck carrying load it puts them in a bind sometimes, and really all the load will be on the bearings, but that s not normal at that mileage for one to go out, they usually last a lot longer than that on any vehicle ,even if they are pulling or hauling a lot of things, good luck with it,i hope this helps.

I don't know what brand of SUV you have, but no wheel bearing should need replaced at 38000 miles.
No, you didn't cause it. Drivers have no control over it at that mileage.

No you didn't do anything. The bearing was probably not packed properly at the manufactuer's, just for note in the future whenever the brakepads are replaced have the bearings packed. If you've had brake work this should have been addressed.
