I listen to everything, including rap music. And honestly there are rap artists who are far more articulate than a lot of poets out there.
Poetry isn't about rhyming perfectly or even complete sentences or thoughts. Poetry is words that move you emotionally.

Well although i am a huge r&b fan i must say that all rap is not bad rap. Just because you see people messing it up doesn't mean that all rap is bad. I mean look at Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five they were the first rap group inducted into the hall of fame. Look at nas his rap is powerful poetry. But i do agree in some aspects that some rap is not uplifting! But, i do prefer R&B.

Mostly Classic Rock. Some current, like Kid Rock and Evanescence, Bowling For Soup...
The only rap I listen to is Ludacris, Eminem and Run DMC.
Anything that involves rappers saying "I came from the streets, I still got love for my homies, now here I am, throwing $50s at strippers while they're still running from cops" I can't stand.

No don't agree with you. There are some Rap artists that attempt poetry and succesfully do it. Like Lyfe and Mary J/Brooke and Common. Some rap can be called that nut not all rap.

If they actually were decent poets, it would be worth listening to. I , as an English major, still consider myself to suck at that so I don't think it will ever happen. That's not to say nothing clever has ever been stated with rap, but most of the time it's obvious the words are written by someone who has no conception of style, form or even decent expression of basic human emotions. If these people were to recite their words with no music, in a plain voice, they'd be boo'd off stage.
Rap music is like a movie like Snakes on a Plane - You're expected to check your brain at the door. It's primal music without a lot of thought put into it. Why would I say this? I actually play music and can play any rap-beat 5 seconds after hearing it on my drums. The music I love is almost impossible for me to peform because so much went into it making it a more complicated artform.
You'll get a couple dozen people jeering you for this but anyone with a serious love for music OR poetry can see that Rap is just now just a marketing tool and full of poop. The artistic merit is at an absolute minimum.
On the contrary, if you're looking for a similar sound, but want to hear it with talent and meaningful words, check out Reggae music. I always will say Reggae is rap that doesn't suck. Now I'm not talking Sean Paul but things like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh. The groove compared to rap is quite similar but the lyrical content is far more introspective and enjoyable.

I am right there with you. I don't belive it's music, art, or makes any contribution to the artistic world. That's just my opinion. I like most kinds of music except for rap.

I grew up listening to rap and hip-hop, I love it. We all have our different opinions and taste but that is my favorite kind of music.
