They have a "mother lode of 55 electoral votes" which can help a candidate tremendously right at the beginning of the primary season. See the story I've referenced below from the San Francisco Gate.

It just means that California actually matters now in the primaries. Before, the candidate for each respective party was chosen long before June (when the Calif. primaries used to be). California's say really didn't matter. Now, the state is going to be one of the forerunners in the primary elections. This could mean two things: a) everyone else may follow suit after Calif, Iowa, NH and NY have their say and/or b) the prim. election will be over and done with in February, figuratively, because with those states locked up, it really won't matter what the others have to say.

California has been holding its primary elections in June. By then small farm states have already had a major impact on who will get the nomination for their respective parties.

The nations' most populous state has decided they need to have a greater say earlier on and so the governor has just signed a law moving the primary from June to February. Other big states are thinking of following California in early primaries. The end result is a Super Super-Tuesday. Eventually we may see a national primary/caucus day. That would give candidates 9 months to campaign. Do you think we will be sick of it by then?

Since California has so many people, the way they vote will most likely affect the way the rest of the later voting states vote. For example, if California (a big state) votes (earlier) for Hilliary to be the DNC candidate, a later voting smaller state might vote the same way thus Hilliary may most likely be the DNC candidate. If that were the case and depending who the Republican candidate is, you might want to slash your wrists as soon as the California votes are counted.

whether it changes the process of voting is debatible. What is not debatible is that we currently have the most pathetic class of politicians in American History. I think our founding fathers would all vote have them lined up and shot by firing squad.

We are in a sad state of affairs and our politicians are the reason why. Please vote to have term limits on senators and vote out everyone that is currently there!!!
