a knock can be two things....a worn set of journal bearings,
a worn set of piston rings that are allowing the piston to slap around in its bore.
If you are getting a jerking movement, then chances are that your fuel is cutting out, timing is way off, or you may have a burnt or chipped valve(s) leaking compression.

You need to learn how to type. Second you need to isolate the problem better because what you vaguely described could be a million things. The jerking could be any number of fuel problems like a fuel filter or emission controls.
The second answer makes no sense at all. If your oil was too low the engine would lock up and be ruined. Buying premium gas would not do anything either. Unless your engine is high compression, which a 99 escort would not be, higher octane fuel will have no effect. And jerking is not vibrating.

Sounds like a broke valve. If it's knocking from the top of the engine. I'f you've run it with no oil chances are it's a rod bearing. The knock will come from the lower part of the engine. If the knock is like a tapeing noise, on top of the engine it could be a colapesd lifter. Sounds like a lifter, dosen't fill with oil not allowing the valve to open. The part is cheap but its deep in the engine. High labor cost.

With the knock, first things first. Check your oil level. Then what temp is the engine running at? Normal level? Did it just start? Could be bad gas, buy some premium unleaded from a brand name station and fill it up.
On the jerking, I assume you mean a vibration? Most likely a wheel balance problem. Have your wheels balanced. (Could be a defective tire but any decent shop will tell you that when you bring it in for a balancing.)

I'd suggest you stop driving it, and have it looked at as soon as possible before you are left with a tow bill on the road after the engine fails on you. A knock is not something to ignore, but it can't be diagnosed on line either.

its a detonation.. where the fuel burn to fast before the pistons TDC..(top dead center) cause by out of tune ignition timing,.. seriously that cause the jerking.. by now i think the knocking already damage your piston crown..
