If you are asking about why some women go "overdue" (more properly known as postdates), then it is probably b/c the baby is simply not ready to be born yet. There's good evidence that the baby secretes a signal telling the mother's body when s/he is ready to be born and that triggers the start of labor. Given that so many women (if not most) do not chart their fertility signs and cannot confirm ovulation date, the estimates of due date can be off by a couple of weeks sometimes.

If you are asking why it takes a long time for some women to get pregnant, there can be many, many reasons. A good place to start is charting a woman's fertility signs. She can then see when she is fertile and if there are any issues which might be affecting her ability to conceive or carry a pregnancy.
