if you are talking about land surface, then its the shore of the Dead Sea.

If you are talking about surface of sea bed, then it is the Marina trench in the Pacific Ocean.

Ivan R is mistaken on both his points. The Danakil depression is NOT lower in elevation than the Dead Sea. It does contain the lowest point in Africa, but at about 155 meters below sea level it does not even come close to the Dead Sea which is about 420 meters below sea level.

Also - humans (not just their technology, but a manned vehicle) definately HAVE been to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

Just a side note -- The Bentley Subglacial Trench in Antarctica is the lowest point on the surface of the earth not covered by ocean at around 2,500 meters below sea level. Since it is covered by ice it is generally not thought of as being the "surface" of the earth, so the Dead Sea is usually considered the lowest point on the surface.

The Danakil Depression is 512 feet below sea level. The Dead Sea is much lower, at more than 1340 feet down, and getting lower all the time as it dries up.
the United States Navy bathyscaphe Trieste reached the bottom of the Marianas Trench at 1:06 p.m. on January 23, 1960, with U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard on board.

The elevation of the land surface of the Earth varies from the low point of −418 m (−1,371 ft) at the Dead Sea, to a 2005-estimated maximum altitude of 8,848 m (29,028 ft) at the top of Mount Everest. The mean height of land above sea level is 686 m (426 ft).[29]

Hello,

(ANS) The lowest point or place on the earth is found in Africa, in Ethopia to be precise. In a place called the Danakill depression its many hundreds of feet below sea level and its a very volcanically active area of the world, as it sits on the junction of the African & Asian tecktonic plates.

**Danakill depression is the lowest dry place on the earth! its lower than the dead sea in Israel.

**The Marania trench is one of the deepest points in the ocean floor, with a depth of 7 kilometers to the bottom. No! man made machine has ever made it to the bottom due to the intense pressures involved.

it is in the bottom of some fissures in the pacific ocean. I think it is still the Pacific Ocean's Marianas Trench. It's near Guam and is 35,840 feet (10,924 m) deep but there was something recently about some searching the atlantic.

lowest point not underwater is bottom of Dead Sea. on the border of Jordan and Israel. The Dead Sea lies at 1,312 feet (400 meters) below sea level
