If I want to invest online in ETFs, which discount brokers do you have experience with and which would you recommend? Which should I stay away from?

I have been happy with TD Ameritrade for a while now. Folks I know well have been happy with Muriel Siebert, E-trade and Scotttrade. (Siebert's a little more expensive.) And the big guy Fidelity is really tempting now that they've lowered their commissions.

If you are investing in ETFs then your needs for research etc. may be a little less demanding than other folks (for example, investing in options extensively would lead to some brokers more than others.)

In addition to asking for personal references, you would probably be well-advised to look at some of the online broker reviews and tests that the money-oriented magazines have done. For example, Smart Money did a review in the fall, available at: http://www.smartmoney.com/brokers/index.cfm?)story=august2006 and Barron's did a nice survey last year: http://webreprints.djreprints.com/1550280182488.html

Specifically for ETFs, Scottrade. $7 commissions, no fees. Cheapest service I've seen.

I've been happily using TD Ameritrade for years, but I just came across a company called Zecco trading. zecco.com. The price seems too good to be true so it probably is but I may give them a try.

I am going to have to agree with Scottrade. I moved my accounts from Ameriprise to Scottrade because of all fees and I have been very happy with Scottrade - can't beat $7 trades. Their customer service is excellent too!
