I don't think it's resentment. This is how I believe many Brits see the US.

In America Brits see a society which claims to be equal and it is not.
A society which claims freedom yet it uses legislation and fear to remove those freedoms.
A society where young children have to pledge elegance to a flag and are therefore brain washed to believe they are free and equal.

A country willing to use it's military might to attack anyone it might perceive as a threat or has something they need (oil in Iraq is a good example).
A country with a government which manipulates the media to spread fear and use this fear to control it's people.

It doesn't take a much to see the similarities between this way of thinking and many of the countries the US classes as enemy's.

There is nothing Wong with being a patriot, but there is a fine line between patriotism and extremism.

That said, I'm a Brit with an American wife and have lived in many different countries. Every country has it's faults and those that choose to ignore them tend to open themselves up to ridicule from others. Unfortunately the US administrations tend to ignore their own faults and focus on what they consider to be others faults.

There is a great book called "Why do we hate America?" written by an American and dutch guy. It explores other peoples perception of America how these perceptions are formed.

Nobody or no country is perfect. I think the US is a great country, with (on the whole) great people. But because the US has such a high profile on the world stage it's faults are highlighted and in some cases exaggerated.

Unfortunately the American dream appears to be to dominate the world, by persuasion if possible of by force if not. Why, if you can, do you not add up the number of countries that your government have destroyed in order to impose your political system on the people.

At present I see the American dream as being to have a greater Empire than Britain ever had and to do that against anything that the United nations oppose.

Its only natural to resent something that you want but can't have. The UK has no version of the American dream, and if it were what would it be?, the same to be honest, we're just not brainwashed into thinking that everyone can have the same thing from life.

I don't resent the Americans at all in fact I love spending time in the States.

However, after spening time in several different states, I don't think the Amercan dream exists.

Sure it is a beautiful country and you are free - to a certain extent - but there is too much poverty and criminal activity for it to be a dream.

America, like the UK, needs to get their own affairs in order and concentrate on it's own people. Only when it can stand up and say 'all our people are equal, we have stamped out poverty and educated everyone' do they have the right to help sort out other countries.

It's hard to know what is meant by the 'american dream', but I would interpret it as the cause of the current conspicuous consumption and arrogance that makes much of the world resent the US.

A little humility goes a long way.

What is the American dream? - we dont resent it, whatever it is. Its your priviledge to be delusional. Anyway, in another 50 years the American dream will largely be a Mexican one - better start getting your kids to learn Spanish so they can enjoy it.

When your government stops interfering into the affairs of other countries (including Britain) and starts looking after its own people.
The poverty in what is supposed to be the richest and most civilised Christian country in the world is a disgrace.
Let your government do a self assessment on the U S A before playing war games all over the planet.
Shame on you!

Tyler, why would anyone in the uk want the "american dream" it is not only presumptive but arrogant that the US thinks everyone in the world sees them as an example to aspire to. We here in the UK have centuries of traditions and history while the US is relatively young as an nation and as such isnt overburdened with centuries of these traditions.

To resent a person dream then one must be jealous of that dream. NO ONE in their right mind would be jealous of any yank dream, You yanks are a bunch of arrogant, lard ar$e,trigger happy no good, interbred red necks who need to realise that they are not as big or as powerful as they think.
It's a shame you people can only dream, because reality for you sucks doesn't it?
