Just make sure the words "open mike" are big and prominent. It's important to let people know that ANYONE can read. You could also host "theme" readings, like poems about computers, or poems about hanging out. You just might hit on something that will bring out that shy person who's been sitting in the back. But as a host, you also have to pull the people up there. If you see someone who isn't as polished as the other people or seems a bit shy, pick them first. Skip over the usual people: they probably have big ego anyway from people telling them how good they are. And encourage everyone to applaud and pay attention to everyone else. Most of the good poetry readings I go to have a sense of family where the MC encourages people to support each other.

I would put up fliers all over your school telling people that anybody is invited. You can also advertise that not only is this a chance to read your poetry to others, new poets are welcome too because they can learn new skills and get some constructive criticism for their poetry. Also, tell all your friends about it and maybe they can pass it on to some of their friends who like poetry.

make sure it's abundantly clear that people can just come to listen if they'd like: that there's no pressure to actually read something. You'd be surprised how many will actually start reading and sharing their own work after a few weeks of observation.
Good luck! Spread the poetry-love!

I would say maybe if you and your poetry teacher got together and explained to the class whats the joy /meaning in it is all about , while having a pizza party in the class. I think more will want to sign up. later if you work your poetry into school plays , who knows you will be a hit with more then just a few. laughter brings friends. but don't forget your when its time to cry for joy, as in the play romeo and juliet. good luck.

Try pitching the story to the school newspaper. Also you can post fliers around the English departmenti and in your classes. Ask professors to announce the club at the beginning of classes. Also post on Craigslist and social networks where applicable.
