Ok I have to write a paper about healthcare barriers for lesbians. Any lesbians out there please answer this I need ideas. From research that I did online I have gotten that many lesbians are embarrased to ask about female condoms or maybe the health care provider is embarrased to talk about ways to prevent STIs with lesbians because they do not know how they have sex. Anything like that, if any of you have had experiences like that or things that make you feel that healthcare is inadequate because you are a lesbian. I hope I made it clear, I might have confused you more.

If me and my partner are on vacation in say, California, and she gets injured badly and is in the hospital, her family is in Florida, I am the only one there who knows her, but I can't go into her room. She will sit in the hospital room all alone, because I am not "family", according to the laws in some states. That, I would say, is a pretty big barrier.

The largest and worst barrier is the bigotry of most doctors. They don't want to care for gay or lesbian patients, so they ignore what we're saying to get us faster out of their office.

i think the biggest thing you're not including in your research is the inability to marry the life partner of your choice. This may not seem huge but think about it, how many people don't have any insurance at all and if one partner does, they can't share it. another problem encountered i think, would be having children.
